OLADE will support the program aimed at introducing renewable energy sources in Cuba

The Executive Secretary of OLADE, Alfonso Blanco, participated during the Sustainable Energy Forum Cuba 2018, on January 30, 2018, in the city of Havana-Cuba.  In the framework of the bilateral meetings held during the event, the Executive Secretary held a meeting with the Minister of Energy and Mines, and the Vice Minister of Foreign Trade and Foreign Investment of Cuba, Alfredo López and Ileana Nuñez Mordoche, a space in which OLADE  offered his support to the program aimed at introducing renewable energy sources in Cuba.

At the Sustainable Energy Forum Cuba 2018, the Executive Secretary Alfonso Blanco presented the status of the projects developed on sustainable energy in Latin America.

This meeting is aimed at promoting renewable sources and their efficient use. Conferences are held on the current status and the transition towards sustainable energy, the generation of electrical energy from solid waste, sustainable solutions in energy conversion, as well as as the development and application of the photovoltaic power plant.

Additionally, topics related to investment opportunities in renewable energy and energy efficiency in Cuba were discussed, and others such as solar energy with generation technology and experiences in the financing of sustainable energy development.  This event is attended by 60 speakers and national and international experts.

The Executive Secretary Alfonso Blanco, during his participation in this event, spoke with journalists from the international news agency Prensa Latina, where he explained that the “Caribbean has a great opportunity for development, because it can grasp the Latin American experience, nevertheless he warned that there are barriers to be overcome, including the transformation of the generation matrix.”            

He also said that the energy market is in the process of change, he explained that the production costs of renewables are cheaper and that opportunity should be availed.  “The countries of the Caribbean and Cuba have a very strong potential for the use of these resources,”  .

He added that this translates into an improvement in the productivity and efficiency of its productive sectors, and exemplified that, if cane bagasse is used in the sugar industry to provide energy to the network and efficiency is also achieved in the sector, a win-win equation.
