In February 2026, electricity generation in LAC reached 158 TWh, with the generation mix led by hydropower (45.4%), followed by natural gas (22.7%) and wind power (12.2%). Together, hydropower, natural gas, and wind accounted for more than 80% of monthly electricity generation. Overall, renewable energy sources contributed 67.7% of total electricity generation.
Monthly electricity generation declined by 6.2% compared with January 2026, affecting all generation sources and reflecting a system-wide adjustment (February had only 28 days). The sharpest relative declines were recorded in coal (-17%), geothermal (-14%), and natural gas (-10%).
On a year-on-year basis, total electricity generation increased by 3.9% compared with February 2025. The sharp decline in hydropower generation (-9 TWh) was offset by a combined increase in other generation technologies (+15 TWh), led by wind power (+6 TWh), bioenergy (+5 TWh), and solar power (+2 TWh), indicating that year-on-year growth was driven predominantly by renewable energy sources. The regional renewable energy share stood at 67.7% in February 2026, with 12 countries exceeding that level, including Paraguay and Costa Rica, both of which recorded a 100% renewable energy share.
