In Panama, through a provision of the Rational and Efficient Energy Use Law, a business model that generates new jobs based on replaced inefficient equipment scrapping is analyzed

As part of the technical cooperation activities that the Latin American Energy Organization (Olade) develops with the authorities of the energy sector of Panama, on October 14, 2019, in the capital city of the country, the proposal on the mechanism of disposition of replaced inefficient equipment (especially appliances) was presented jointly with the Secretariat of Energy of Panama. This proposal is part of the actions provided by the Rational and Efficient Energy Use Law (UREE) of Panama.

In compliance with the UREE Law, this proposal will avoid 2 aspects: 1) that the replaced equipment is part of a second-hand equipment market and 2) that the expected effects of the energy efficiency programs and campaigns developed are eliminated.

With the mechanism for the disposal of inefficient equipment, a business model that generates new jobs around the scrapping of replaced inefficient equipment is expected in Panama. So that the benefits of energy efficiency programs, developed from the implementation of the UREE Law, are made effective.

The development of this proposal is part of the activities of the Latin American and Caribbean Energy Efficiency Program (PALCEE) phase III, which Olade develops with the support of the Austrian Development Agency (ADA); Program that aims to reinforce energy efficiency initiatives that are under development and encourage intergovernmental cooperation in beneficiary countries in this phase of the Program (Panama and Dominican Republic).

The meeting to address this issue was led by the Secretary of Energy of Panama, Jorge Rivera; the international consultant in charge of the development of the proposal, Manuel de Diego and the Director of Studies, Projects and Information of Olade, Andrés Schuschny.
