The electricity generation report for Latin America and the Caribbean in May 2025 shows a 7% increase compared to April 2025 and a 5% increase compared to May 2024. This growth marks a new record high over the past twelve months. In terms of contribution by source, hydropower remains the leading source of generation, accounting for 51.1% of the total, followed by natural gas (21.8%) and wind power (9.5%), which together represent the three most widely used sources.
During this month, the renewable energy index for the region registered a slight decline, mainly due to higher electricity generation from fossil fuels, particularly natural gas, despite the recovery of hydropower output.
The index, however, has shown relative stability over the past two months.
