This Technical Note provides a detailed analysis of the various technological alternatives available for energy storage, with a particular focus on those that are more advanced in the region.
Based on data collected on installed capacity, the document highlights the growing deployment of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), while pumped hydro storage—despite the region’s significant hydropower potential—has only been implemented in a limited number of countries.
The document also examines the main challenges facing energy storage, especially in regulatory and legal frameworks, and proposes strategies to promote its development as a strategic tool to accelerate the integration of variable renewable energy sources into national power systems. Among these strategies, the note emphasizes the importance of conducting studies to accurately identify storage capacity needs as the most technical and economically viable option for each country.
