Report No. 8: Electricity Generation in Latin America and the Caribbean

In July 2025, electricity generation in Latin America and the Caribbean reached 161 TWh, with hydropower as the main source (45.7%), although it decreased compared to June due to drought conditions.

Natural gas increased its share as backup in response to reduced hydropower output and renewable intermittency. Compared to July 2024, total generation grew 4.5%, driven mainly by a 10.2 TWh increase in hydropower.

The renewability index fell to 65% (down from 71% in June) because of lower hydropower contribution, highlighting the region’s strong dependence on this resource. Countries such as Paraguay and Costa Rica led with 100% renewability, while other countries continue to rely heavily on fossil fuels.
