Natural Gas in the transition to Low-Carbon Economies. The case of Latin America and the Caribbean

This document provides an overview of the role of natural gas, complemented by lower carbon/green
gases, in the energy transition in the specific context of Latin America and the Caribbean. It aims to contribute
to the international energy dialogue, to help in the understanding of the critical benefits that gases can bring
to the energy transition, and to provide evidence and insights to inform energy stakeholders about the unique
opportunities and challenges of this important region.
The global energy and food shortages of the past year have shown that the market will respond quickly to price
signals – for example by rapidly increasing LNG exports to Western Europe by 66% in 2022 – but those high
prices have been devastating to consumers at all levels.
