VI Energy Week: Olade and IDB launched the Energy Management Systems Observatory

The launch of this Observatory of Energy Management Systems, which has segmented information on the energy sector of more than 25 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, was officially announced on November 18 during the second day of the VI Energy Week, 2021.

During this session, the Executive Secretary of the Latin American Energy Organization (Olade), Alfonso Blanco, informed that in 2020 the collaboration between Olade and the Inter-American Development Bank was formalized with the objective of creating a platform for the exchange of information on best practices and lessons learned from the implementation of energy management systems in Latin America and the Caribbean. In addition to identifying possibilities and sources of financing to promote the implementation of this type of initiative.

The executive secretary detailed the three stages in which the project was developed:

  1. Survey and analysis of energy management systems, their results, experiences and best practices.
  2. Development of a roadmap to propose alternatives and recommendations that will allow a systemic multiplication of the scope of the identified programs.
  3. Development of the Regional Observatory of Energy Management Systems.

“The observatory aims to make a decisive contribution to promoting the adoption of efficiency measures in the sectors with the highest consumption, mainly in the industry, said Olade’s executive secretary, Alfonso Blanco.

Leonardo Beltrán and Andrea Heins, consultants who worked on the development of this tool, indicated that it is the benchmark for data and knowledge generation on the energy sector in Latin America and the Caribbean.

They explained in detail that the project pursues three main objectives:

Hence, the Energy Management Systems Observatory is defined as an Energy HUB:

“The Energy HUB is a digital meeting point that collects, integrates, disseminates and drives the generation of data and information on the energy sector in Latin America and the Caribbean in one place.”

Currently, this initiative presented by Olade and IDB already counts with partners such as IRENA, Sustainable Energy for All, Ariae and ECLAC.

This tool allows greater transparency and immediacy when accessing national and regional energy sector data in Latin America and the Caribbean.
