The General Secretariat of the Andean Community and the Latin American Energy Organization sign an agreement to strengthen energy integration in the region.

In order to strengthen energy integration in the region and coordinate joint actions, the General Secretariat of the Andean Community and the Latin American Energy Organization signed a cooperation agreement.

OLADE is an intergovernmental public body for technical cooperation, coordiantion and advisory, integrated by 27 countries of Latin America and the Caribbean, with the fundamental objective of fostering integration, development, conservation, rational use, commercialization and defense of the region’s energy resources.

The Andean Community (CAN), made up of Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru, is a leading international organization in integration in the continent, working to improve the quality of life of 115 million Andean citizens, whose objective is to achieve integral, balanced and autonomous development through Andean integration, with a projection towards South American and Latin American integration.

This agreement, signed on June 26 by the secretary general of CAN, Mr. Diego Caicedo, and the executive secretary of OLADE, Mr. Andrés Rebolledo Smitmans, updates and expands the existing working and cooperation relations between the two institutions, in line with their respective competencies and work programs. Joint collaboration will focus on the development of joint activities, studies, plans, programs and projects that contribute to the adoption of Andean energy regulations and the deepening of energy integration in the member countries of the Andean Community.

The areas of collaboration will cover key aspects such as energy integration, energy infrastructure, energy trade, energy statistical information, the impact of climate change on electricity generation and prices, renewable energies, energy efficiency, energy access for rural communities, among other topics relevant to the region.

Both parties agree to use various modalities of collaboration, including the development of publications and research, exchange of information, organization of expert meetings, technical assistance, training and capacity building, exchange of experiences and knowledge, as well as the formulation of projects of common interest.

The secretary general of CAN, Diego Caicedo, emphasized that energy integration is now a priority for the Andean Community. He pointed out that a few weeks ago, the countries through the Andean Committee of Regulatory Bodies of Electricity Services expressed their conformity to the project that modifies Decision 816 “Regulatory Framework for the Subregional Interconnection of Electricity Systems and Intra-Community Electricity Exchange” and the three regulations: operational, commercial and of the regional coordinator, with which the Andean Regional Short-Term Electricity Market will be able to become effective.

For his part, OLADE’s executive secretary, Andrés Rebolledo, mentioned that the agreement reaffirms the organization’s commitment to regional energy integration and cooperation for the benefit of the Andean countries, through close collaboration and the implementation of joint projects focused on promoting sustainable development, the optimization of energy resources and the security of electricity supply in the region.

With this agreement, CAN and OLADE reaffirm their commitment to regional energy integration and cooperation for the benefit of member countries. Through close collaboration and the implementation of joint projects, it is expected to promote sustainable development, the optimization of energy resources and the security of electricity supply in the region.
