Honduras, through the Secretary of State for Energy, on the morning of January 20, 2021, in a first coordination session, formed the Energy Consultative Committee, in which the Latin American Energy Organization (Olade) participates, together with authorities of public and private institutions, international cooperation, academia and actors related to the energy sector. The objective of this Committee is to support the construction of a National Energy Policy for Honduras that encourages the development of renewable energy resources and their efficient use.

The Secretary of State for Energy of Honduras, Roberto Ordoñez, stated that “the formation of this Committee is a fundamental element, since it will be responsible for planning the development of energy at the national level in the short, medium and long term”.

“Issues such as health, improvement in education and electrical energy services, must be included within all binding issues of this Energy Policy”.

In addition, in his speech, the Secretary of Energy emphasized the importance of energy policy having a holistic vision, since he pointed out that “this sector includes not only traditional sources of energy generation but also what has to do with renewable energy sources, hydrocarbons, biomass, among others”.

“The Ministry of Energy began a careful process of identification and selection of key actors, who due to their experience, knowledge and outstanding professional career will be able to contribute elements for the construction of this policy”.

For his part, the Executive Secretary of Olade, Alfonso Blanco, said he felt comfortable, from the Organization to support and promote the generation of an energy policy for Honduras.

“From Olade we are going to give support to the development of the Energy Policy. We emphasize the importance of a holistic vision for planning and the integration of different actors who participate in this planning”

In addition, he pointed out that the link must be ever closer between the energy and environment aspects.

“An essential issue is how from the construction of an energy policy, a State policy that ensures sustainability over time can be generated. For this, the setting up of dialogue instances to be incorporated into the energy policy is strictly necessary”.

In this context, the Executive Secretary of Olade, Alfonso Blanco, presented the regional energy outlook of Latin America and the Caribbean. “To build an energy policy we must do it based on a deep technical analysis of what the situation of our energy sector is and based on that study, analyze and develop models that demonstrate, what is the feasibility cost, the socioeconomic impact at the level of the environment of our energy policy. And how our energy sector fits into a development model that the country has”.
