OLADE participated in the 2023 Global Energy Interconnection Conference in Beijing.

OLADE’s Director of Energy Integration, Access and Security, Gloria Alvarenga, spoke about energy transitions in Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as OLADE’s cooperation and role during the 2023 Global Energy Interconnection Conference in Beijing, organized by the Global Energy Interconnection Development and Cooperation Organization (GEIDCO).

During his participation in the China-Latin America Energy Cooperation Forum, she shared the stage with Cheng Zhiquiang, Executive Secretary for Cooperation of GEIDCO; Qiu Xiaoqi, Special Representative of the Chinese Government for Latin American Affairs; Xu Haoling, Associate Administrator of UNDP; and Jeffrey Sachs, President of the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network.

In her speech, she highlighted national and regional efforts to achieve a gradual decarbonization of the energy sector, which implies greater diversification of the generation matrix, increased use of considerably less carbon-intensive fuels, greater penetration of renewable energies in end uses, increased energy efficiency and greater regional energy integration.

She also stressed that OLADE has worked hard to improve the quality of educational programs focused on renewable energy, training future educators and equipping demonstration centers. This helps to prepare the region and ensure the necessary local skills and a skilled workforce. Alvarenga also emphasized the vision of sustainability and the importance of cooperation ties with the Republic of China, which represents great opportunities for the region.

Within the framework of the 2023 Global Energy Interconnection Conference, Gloria Alvarenga moderated a panel on the energy positions and needs of countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, with the participation of representatives from Argentina, Chile, Honduras, Mexico, the Dominican Republic and Uruguay.

This conference, organized by GEIDCO, aims to drive and promote the green and low-carbon energy transition, as well as deepen international cooperation in the energy sector.
