{"id":30879,"date":"2025-08-15T11:02:43","date_gmt":"2025-08-15T16:02:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.olade.org\/noticias\/electric-mobility-in-latin-america-and-the-caribbean-progress-and-challenges-for-its-mass-adoption\/"},"modified":"2025-08-15T11:02:43","modified_gmt":"2025-08-15T16:02:43","slug":"electric-mobility-in-latin-america-and-the-caribbean-progress-and-challenges-for-its-mass-adoption","status":"publish","type":"noticias","link":"https:\/\/www.olade.org\/en\/noticias\/electric-mobility-in-latin-america-and-the-caribbean-progress-and-challenges-for-its-mass-adoption\/","title":{"rendered":"Electric Mobility in Latin America and the Caribbean: progress and challenges for its mass adoption"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Fitzgerald Cantero Piali, Director of Studies, Projects and Information at The Latin American and Caribbean Energy Organization (OLACDE), carried out an academic agenda at the Escuela Superior Polit\u00e9cnica del Litoral (ESPOL), where he delivered the keynote lecture <em>\u201cImpact of the Energy Transition and Electric Mobility\u201d<\/em> to authorities, faculty, and students of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Production Sciences.<\/p>\n<p>During his presentation, Cantero outlined the regional panorama of electromobility and highlighted that, according to OLACDE\u2019s 2024 map, Ecuador ranks seventh in two key indicators:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Among the Latin American and Caribbean countries with the highest number of electric buses in circulation (106 units).<\/li>\n<li>Among the countries with the largest charging station networks (144 points).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Cantero stressed that the transition to electric mobility requires not only infrastructure and technology but also <em>\u201ca cultural change\u201d<\/em>, which involves citizens adopting practices such as charging vehicles at home.<\/p>\n<p>On the technical side, he noted that in an internal combustion vehicle, between 15% and 84% of the energy is lost, whereas in an electric vehicle, the loss is only 11%. This is further supported by the region\u2019s potential to generate electricity from renewable sources such as hydropower, solar, and wind.<\/p>\n<p>He also emphasized that Ecuador already has an advanced legal framework to facilitate the incorporation of electric vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>Juan Peralta, coordinator of the Master\u2019s in Energy Systems at ESPOL and member of the National Committee on Energy Efficiency, stressed that upgrading transformers \u201cwill be an essential component to ensure capacity and supply quality,\u201d and that tax incentives could accelerate the adoption of this technology.<\/p>\n<p>OLACDE\u2019s participation in this space reinforces its commitment to promoting policies and actions that advance a fair, sustainable, and inclusive energy transition in the
