In the context of the Ekos Sustainability Summit 2025, organized by Revista Ekos in Quito, the Executive Secretary of The Latin American and Caribbean Energy Organization (OLACDE), Andr\u00e9s Rebolledo, shared a strategic and forward-looking vision for the region\u2019s energy future.<\/p>\n
During his presentation, Rebolledo emphasized that green energy represents a unique opportunity to advance sustainable development, attract responsible investment, and strengthen regional equity. He highlighted that in 2024 alone, the region installed 25 GW of new renewable capacity\u201416 GW from solar energy and 7 GW from wind\u2014consolidating Latin America’s leadership in clean energy generation worldwide.<\/p>\n
\u201cEnergy transition is no longer a promise; it is a reality in progress,\u201d he affirmed. He pointed out that key sectors such as mobility, heating, industrial production, and air conditioning are being rapidly electrified, forming a critical pillar of the decarbonization process. \u201cIf we want more electric mobility, we must first ensure supply\u2014and ensure it is clean,\u201d he stressed.<\/p>\n
In a challenging economic context\u2014with an average regional growth of 0.9% over the past decade\u2014electricity demand rose by 1.7%, signaling a structural transformation underway. \u201cElectrification is advancing in Latin America and the Caribbean faster than economic growth itself,\u201d Rebolledo stated.<\/p>\n
He also underscored the diversity of institutional models across the region\u2019s energy sector, citing Ecuador\u2019s mix of public and private participation as an example of a hybrid model that opens new strategic opportunities for investment and cooperation.<\/p>\n
Lastly, he addressed the role of emerging technologies such as offshore wind energy\u2014with significant developments in Colombia and Brazil\u2014and next-generation nuclear energy, which is smaller, safer, and already being explored by countries like Ecuador.<\/p>\n
\u201cEnergy transformation responds not only to climate commitments but also to a need for competitiveness. Markets are demanding goods and services produced with clean energy. That makes us stronger and more attractive,\u201d he concluded.<\/p>\n
With this participation, OLACDE reaffirms its commitment to advancing energy policies that ensure fair, inclusive, and sustainable development for Latin America and the Caribbean.<\/p>\n
