The Latin American and Caribbean Energy Organization (OLACDE) participated in the 2nd International Conference on Climate Change and the Role of Nuclear Energy 2023, called “Atoms4NetZero”, organized by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna.<\/p>\n
This event brought together 550 participants from 81 countries and 26 invited organizations. Participants agreed that nuclear power plays a crucial role in addressing climate change, but it must overcome several challenges to achieve the large-scale implementation that several authoritative global studies indicate is necessary to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.<\/p>\n
On behalf of OLACDE, the Chief of Staff, Guido Maiulini, spoke at the conference on Climate Change and the role of Nuclear Energy. Maiulini stressed that in Latin America and the Caribbean there is no animosity against nuclear technology. The main concern is to be able to create cost-effective solutions for the population, and he emphasized the need for access to financing. “This is what can make the difference for the deployment of new nuclear infrastructure,” Maiulini said. In addition, he stressed that “nuclear energy can be a partner for the development of Latin America and the Caribbean.”<\/p>\n
The event included ten high-level panels, one high-level segment, one special session, 18 technical sessions, and seven side events hosted by various stakeholders. Aiming to help governments and financial institutions make data-driven and scientifically informed decisions about their investments in future energy systems, the IAEA last year launched the Atoms4NetZero initiative. In cooperation with various partners, this initiative aims to provide a comprehensive energy scenario modelling service that shows the full potential of nuclear power to achieve net zero emissions, including non-electrical applications such as hydrogen production.<\/p>\n
