OLACDE makes available the study “Energy Policy and NDCs in Latin America and the Caribbean: Evaluation of current energy development policies of the region, as a contribution to compliance with the commitments on climate change – Bases for a necessary debate”<\/p>\n

Throughout this document, the effectiveness of current energy development policies in the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) is analyzed, as a contribution to achieving the goals set out in the NDCs, on reducing greenhouse gas emissions to the year 2030. And if necessary, more ambitious energy efficiency measures and penetration of renewable energy sources are proposed, which provide greater security at the regional and subregional levels for the fulfillment of the aforementioned goals.<\/p>\n

For the preparation of this study an energy goals exercise was carried out, with base year 2015 and horizon to 2030 for the LAC region, subdivided into 2 countries and 4 subregions (Brazil, Mexico, Central America, Andean Subregion, Southern Cone and the Caribbean).<\/p>\n

As the main conclusions of the study, it can be summarized that with the premises of the Current Policy Scenario (EPA), represented by its latest expansion plans in the energy sector, none of the subregions analyzed would meet the emission reduction targets referenced based on the NDCs of their countries.<\/p>\n

Therefore, the proposal of a more aggressive policy in terms of energy efficiency and penetration of renewable energies is justified, such as the one simulated in the alternative scenario (ECN), with which at the regional level of LAC a reduction in GHG emissions in the energy sector close to 30% would be achieved, which could be considered satisfactory when compared with the individual goals of most countries.<\/p>\n
