[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]OLACDE, through its Executive Secretary, Alfonso Blanco, participated during the meeting of the Energy Transitions Working Group (ETWG), which was developed within the framework of the G20 convention – Creating Consensus for Equitable Sustainable Development. The meeting began last Wednesday February 21 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.<\/p>\n

The Executive Secretary of OLACDE, during the meetings of the ETWG that took place on February 22 and 23, supported the preparation of the documents of the preliminary agenda, which will be discussed for the meeting of energy ministers of the G20 countries. next June 15, 2018 in Bariloche, Argentina.<\/p>\n

The document “Energy Access and Affordability Voluntary Action Plan for Latin America and the Caribbean” was prepared by OLACDE and the IDB for the presidency of the G20.<\/p>\n

In his speech, the\u00a0 Executive Secretary Alfonso Blanco highlighted the evident improvement that Latin America and the Caribbean has experienced in access to energy in the last 10 years.\u00a0 “The economic development experienced by many of our countries in the last ten years has permiated through our society, allowing us to expand and improve the conditions of access to energy for our population, fundamentally improving the living conditions of the most vulnerable segments. Although there are still 21.8 million Latin American and Caribbean people without access to electricity, the effort has been profound in providing access to electricity to more than 22 million people in less than 10 years.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 However, there are very disturbing cases, such as Haiti, with more than 70% of its population without access to modern energy sources.\u00a0 <\/em>In this regard, the Executive Secretary stressed that this transformation in the growth of access to energy in Latin America and the Caribbean can be aptly replicated in other regions, which do not have this scope of coverage of energy needs.\u00a0 The world population without access to modern sources of energy is estimated at 1.1 billion people.<\/p>\n

The Energy Transitions Working Group (ETWG) <\/strong><\/p>\n

The Working Group on Energy Transitions (ETWG) is a sectorial cooperation forum chaired this year by Juan Jos\u00e9 Aranguren, Minister of Energy and Mining of Argentina.\u00a0\u00a0 This meeting is one of the 11 areas of work of the G20, in which delegates from member countries and international organizations participate.<\/p>\n

“The priority of the ETWG is the transition to more flexible, transparent and clean energy systems.\u00a0 From there, it will be promoted the strengthening of energy efficiency and renewable energies, access and affordability to energy in Latin America and the Caribbean, the reduction of inefficient subsidies to fossil fuels, and the transparency of energy information and the digitalization of energy markets.”\u00a0 <\/em>This is indicated by the official website of the G20 convention.\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n
