Proceedings of the 1986 International Congress on Renewable Energy Sources. Production and thermochemical conversion of short-rotation woody biomass. International Congress on Renewable Energy Sources [18-23 Mayo 1986, Madrid].
Wood crops grown under a short-rotation intensive culture (SRIC) system are an appealing alternate fuel source. Attributes of the short-rotation concept are early return on investment and uniformity of product. Rapid juvenile growth and prolific coppicing are essential to the success of this system. A national program was started in 1978 to evaluate and develop SRIC in the United States. The Central Great Plains region was studied intensively. Factors evaluated included species, tree spacing, cultural practices, length of growing cycle, and coppicing vigor. Screening studies revealed that a number of deciduous species, silver maple, black locust, and Siberian elm, performed best. After five growing seasons at 1.6m x 1.6m spacing, yields ranged from 5 to 12 dry t/ha/yr. in eastern Kansas. On better alluvial sites, native cottonwood yielded 13 dry tonnes per ha. Higher tonnage was obtained with closer spacing and longer rotations. Yields of the first coppice rotation were at least 25. ABSTRACT. greater than the initial seedling rotation. Acer species had the longest stool viability. Preliminary data on the gasification of various tree species and different tree parts in moving bed and fluidized bed gasifiers suggested that wood density is related to the yields obtained in wood gasification. Fluidized bed gasification data for cottonwood branches and SRIC Siberian elm indicated that the higher density Siberian elm produces a higher gas yield. Moving bed gasification ... (ver documento).
