OLADE CELEBRATES A WEEK IN HONOUR OF SURINAME

The Latin American Energy Organization (OLADE) is joining in the celebration of another anniversary of the Suriname's Independence Day, on November 25, 1975, having established the week of November 24 to 28, 2008, as the Week in Honour of the Republic of Suriname. ENERGY MINISTERS OF LATIN AMERICA AND THE CARIBBEAN AGREE TO PROMOTE RENEWABLE ENERGY USE AND ENERGY EFFICIENCY

Ministers of Energy from 17 member countries of the Latin American Energy Organization, gathered at the XXXIX Meeting of Ministers of OLADE on November 14, 2008, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, stated the commitment of the region's countries to foster an increase in the sustainable use of clean renewable energy and other alternative energies as deemed advisable under to their respective laws and local conditions. This agreement was formalized when they signed the so-called Buenos Aires Declaration.

THE TWELFth masters Program in sustainable energy development was inaugurated

On September 25, 2008, at the Universidad San Francisco de Quito, the twelfth Multidisciplinary Masters Program in Sustainable Energy Development was inaugurated. The Program was developed in 1996 by the Latin American Energy Organization (OLADE) and the University of Calgary under the sponsorship of the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA); and, it counts with the academic and institutional support of the Universidad San Francisco de Quito since the year 2006.

OLADE SIGNS A JOINT COOPERATION AGREEMENT WITH ALADI, ARPEL, ECLAC AND CIER

MORE THAN 1600 PROFESSIONALS FROM 24 COUNTRIES WERE TRAINED THROUGH THE VIRTUAL TRAINING PROGRAM OF OLADE

Between October 2006 and August 2008, 1641 professionals of 24 countries of Latin America and the Caribbean have been trained through OLADE’s Virtual Energy Training Program (CAPEV in Spanish), exceeding its goal of training 1300 professionals by the year 2008, as programmed by the Organization.  For 2009, the Organization will expand its training courses and seminars taught under this modality.

OLADE AND IICA WILL EMBARK ON REGIONAL BIOFUEL PROGRAMS

The Latin American Energy Organization (OLADE) and the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) agreed to join efforts to develop and execute the Regional Biofuel Joint Program. This agreement is reflected in a Memorandum of Understanding signed between both international entities.

During this event, the Executive Secretary of OLADE, Dr. Carlos Arturo Flórez Piedrahita expressed that in a sense it is logical the concern of those who think that biofuels will affect the production of food; however, "this concern does not have a reason to be since it is not about stopping to grow varieties of vegetables targeted to food supply to start sowing species used for biofuels generation.On the contrary, it is about optimizing the use of land and the rational use of water for biofuels generation.

OLADE HELD ITS SECOND INFORMATION MEETING WITH THE AMBASSADORS AND CONSULS OF THE MEMBER COUNTRIES OF OLADE

On April 30, 2008, the Latin American Energy Organization (OLADE) held the second information meeting with the Ambassadors and diplomatic representatives of the Member Countries residing in the capital of Ecuador, Quito, headquarters of OLADE. The Latin American Energy Organization (OLADE) will support the fulfillment of what is indicated in the Protocol of Intention on Technical Cooperation in the Energy field, which was signed on April 4, 2008 in Brasilia, Brazil between the Republic of Guatemala and the Federative Republic of Brazil. This Protocol aims to promote mutual cooperation for energy development in rural electrification, energy production and consumption based on renewable energy resources and energy planning.

 
AFRICAN, LATIN AMERICAN AND CARIBBEAN MINISTERS OF ENERGY EXPRESS THEIR COMMITMENT TO DEVELOP POLICIES ON ENERGY COOPERATION TOWARDS SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

THE FUTURE OF THE ENERGY SECTOR OF AFRICA AND LATIN AMERICA WILL BE DISCUSSED

The Second Conference of The African, Latin American and Caribbean Ministers of Energy (AFROLAC II) will be held between April 2 and 3 in Cancun, Mexico, with the aim to promote cooperation in the field of energy and discuss about the current challenges of the energy sector in both continents. THE FORMER MINISTER OF HYDROCARBONS OF BOLIVIA TOOK OFFICE AS THE HYDROCARBONS COORDINATOR OF OLADE

Mr. Mauricio Medinaceli Monrroy, economist and the former Minister of Hydrocarbons of Bolivia, took office as the Hydrocarbons Coordinator of OLADE on March 25, 2008.  The oath of office was administered by the Executive Secretary of OLADE, who highlighted the importance of expanding OLADE’s working group with professionals who possess excellent career paths and experience in the energy field so that all together work to achieve Regional and Sub-regional energy integration.

 
MINISTERS OF AFRICA, LATIN AMERICA AND THE CARIBBEAN WILL MEET IN AFROLAC II

The Ministers of Energy of 26 Countries of Latin America and the Caribbean making up the Latin American Energy Organization (OLADE) and the Ministers of 52 Countries of the African Continent have been invited to participate in AFROLAC II, which will be held in Cancun, Mexico, on April 3, 2008. During this meeting, the Ministers will discuss the challenges and opportunities in the energy sector of both Continents. They will also discuss the role of the different sub-sectors in energy access and security.

 
OLADE STRENGTHENS ITS ROLE IN CENTRAL AMERICA THROUGH SUB-REGIONALIZATION

On March 06, 2007, the Latin American Energy Organization (OLADE) inaugurated its first sub-regional office (OLADE-Central America) in Guatemala by means of which the Organization will reinforce the sub-regional energy integration processes by following-up the actions and projects on energy in the Central American Sub-region. In addition, OLADE will promote the use and maximum advantage of its products and services.

 
THE DIRECTIVE COMMITTEE APPROVED THE EXECUTION OF OLADE'S TRIENNIAL WORK PLAN TOWARDS REGIONAL AND SUB-REGIONAL INTEGRATION

According to the Executive Secretary of OLADE, Mr. Carlos Arturo Flórez Piedrahita, the triennial work plan is the “organization’s navigation chart during the coming three years” and will allow the Organization to meet the requirements of the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean on regional and sub-regional energy integration.  The triennial work plan was approved by the Directive Committee on February 28 and 29.

 
THE MEETING OF THE DIRECTIVE COMMITTEE No 62 WAS INAUGURATED BY THREE MINISTERS OF STATE

On February 28, 2008, the Directive Committee (CODI) inaugurated its 62nd meeting in Quito-Ecuador with the participation of the Energy Secretary of Argentina, Mr. Daniel Cameron, the Secretary of State and the President of the Energy Commission of the Dominican Republic, Mr. Arístides Fernández Zucco and the Minister of Mines and Petroleum of Ecuador, Mr. Galo Chiriboga Zambrano. In addition, the delegates of Brazil, Cuba, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Jamaica, Venezuela and Uruguay were present.

 
PERUVIAN PROFESSIONAL TOOK THE OFFICE OF ELECTRICITY COORDINATOR OF OLADE

Mr. Tomás Montesinos Yépez, national of Peru, took the office of Electricity Coordinator of OLADE on Tuesday 26, 2008. He said that "innovation and knowledge sharing in our countries will complement our goals aimed at  assessing  and promoting cooperation and coordination for the member countries, so that in a nearer future we witness an interconnected Electrical Power System in Latin America that connects all member countries of OLADE.

 
TRAINING COORDINATOR JOINED THE WORK TEAM OF OLADE

Mr. Victorio Oxilia Dávalos, national of Paraguay, took the office of Training Coordinator of OLADE on February 25, 2008. The Ambassador of Paraguay, Mr. Martínez Lezcano, the Executive Secretary of OLADE, Mr.Carlos Arturo Flórez, the representative of Calgary University, Dr. Leda Sánchez as well as the Directors, Coordinators and officials of the Organization were present in the ceremony.

 
THE III ORDINARY MEETING OF THE DIRECTIVE COMMITTEE OF OLADE WILL TAKE PLACE ON FEBRUARY 28 AND 29, 2008

On February 28 and 29, 2008 in Quito-Ecuador, the III Ordinary Meeting of the Directive Committee of OLADE will take place. CODI is the direction, follow up, analysis and evaluation body that analyzes the programs and strategy of the Organization. One of the objectives of this Meeting is the approval of the Organization’s triennial plan.

 
DIRECTOR OF PLANNING AND PROJECTS OF OLADE TOOK OFFICE

Mr.Néstor Luna González (Mechanical Engineer), national of Mexico, took office on February 18, 2008 as the Director of Planning and Projects of the Latin American Energy Organization (OLADE). Mr. Luna said he is proud to collaborate with the OLADE’s management and leadership group and work to make Latin America and the Caribbean competitive in the energy sector.

 
OLADE OPENS VACANCY FOR SUB-REGIONAL COORDINATOR

The Latin American Energy Organization (OLADE) opened vacancy announcement to fill the position of Coordinator of the Sub-regional Office of OLADE in Central America. Postulations will be received by the Permanent Secretariat until 17h30 on Friday, February 22, 2008.

 
13 COUNTRIES OF THE REGION STARTED THE TRAINING ON ENERGY BALANCES

On February 11, 2008, 87 officials from the Ministries and Energy Secretariats of Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela started the course on "Energy Balance Methodology." The course is free of cost for the Member Countries and will be given by experts of the Organization on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9h00 to 10h00 (Quito’s time).  

 
THE DIRECTOR OF INTEGRATION OF OLADE TOOK THE OFFICE

On February 08, 2008 in Quito-Ecuador, Mr. Erick Fernando Cabrera Castellanos, national of Guatemala, took office as the new Director of Integration of OLADE in an official act. He stated his commitment to contribute with the work of the Organization on regional and sub-regional energy integration of Latin America and the Caribbean.

 
OLADE HELD THE FIRST MEETING OF THE YEAR WITH THE DIPLOMATIC REPRESENTATIVES OF THE REGION

Ambassadors and diplomatic representatives of the Latin America and the Caribbean participated in the first meeting of the year held by the Organization in order to inform about the institutional reality and the projects being carried out in the Region, principally in subjects related with energy efficiency and regional and sub-regional integration of the Southern Cone.

 
CAPEV WILL OFFER ON-LINE COURSE ON "ENERGY BALANCE METHODOLOGY"

The first course of 2008 of the Virtual Energy Training Program (CAPEV in Spanish)  will begin on February 11, 2008  free of cost for the officials of the Ministry of Energy of the Region.  The deadline for registration is on January 31.

 
THE EXECUTIVE SECRETARY OF OLADE HIGHLIGHTS THE POTENTIAL DEVELOPMENT OF BIOFUELS IN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

During his official visit to the Dominican Republic, the Executive Secretary of OLADE, Carlos Arturo Flórez, stated that work on biofuels should be intensified and he also stressed on the importance of energy efficiency, which is an unexploited resource in the Region.  

 
CARLOS ARTURO FLOREZ PIEDRAHITA TOOK THE OFFICE AS THE EXECUTIVE SECRETARY OF OLADE

Mr. Carlos Arturo Flórez Piedrahita, Colombian national, will take possession of the post of Executive Secretary of the Latin American Energy Organization (OLADE) on January 11, 2008 for the period of 2008-2010.  The ceremony will count with the presence of the Energy Secretary of Argentina, Daniel Cameron, the Minister of Mines and Petroleum of Ecuador, Galo Chiriboga, the Minister of Electricity and Alternative Energies, Alecksey Mosquera, as well as other government authorities and diplomatic representatives accredited to the Country.  

 
MINISTERIAL ENERGY AUTHORITIES OF 21 COUNTRIES OF LATIN AMERICA AND THE CARIBBEAN SIGNED THE MEDELLIN DECLARATION

Ministers and energy authorities of 21 Countries of Latin America and the Caribbean signed the Medellin Declaration in which they manifested the political will of the Countries of the Region to carry out actions related to Regional and Sub-Regional Energy Integration and its Connection with Supply Security, Energy Efficiency and Environment. The Statement was signed on November 30, 2007 during the XXXVIII Meeting of Ministers of OLADE.

 
MINISTRY OF ENERGY AND MINES OF GUATEMALA SIGNS AGREEMENT WITH OLADE

The Ministry of Energy and Mines of Guatemala signed an agreement of understanding with the Latin American Energy Organization (OLADE) to establish the first sub-regional pilot office of the Organization in Central America. The agreement was signed between the Minister of Energy and Mines, Ms. Carmen Urizar Hernández, and the Ad-Interim Executive Secretary, Ms. Elvia Ortega de Andrade, at the XXXVIII Meeting of Ministers of OLADE.

 
THE XXXVIII MEETING OF MINISTERS ELECTED THE NEW EXECUTIVE SECRETARY OF OLADE FOR THE PERIOD 2008-2010

Doctor Carlos Flórez Piedrahita, current Director of The Mining-Energy Planning Unit (UPME) and National Coordinator of OLADE in Colombia, was elected the new Executive Secretary of the Latin American Energy Organization (OLADE) for the period 2008-2010. The election of the new Executive Secretary was made by the vote of Ministers and energy authorities of 21 Countries of the Region, who participated in the XXXVIII Meeting of Ministers of OLADE on November 30, 2007.

 
FIER 2007 SUCCESSFULLY CONCLUDED

The II Regional Energy Integration Forum (FIER 2007) held between 28-30 November 2007 in Medellin-Colombia achieved its goal of presenting the vision and perspective on energy integration from several players of the energy sector of the Region and guide public and entrepreneurial interests to manage public policies and investments in order to deepen the integration process and development of the energy sector in the Region.

 

INTEGRATION, EFFICIENCY AND ENERGY SUPPLY ARE TOPICS TO BE DISCUSSED AT THE XXXVIII MEETING OF MINISTERS OF OLADE

“Regional and Sub-Regional Energy Integration and tts Connection with Supply Security, Energy Efficiency and Environment” is the name of the main topic to be analyzed in the XXXVIII Meeting of Ministers of OLADE, which will take place on November 30, 2007 in Medellin-Colombia.

 

FIER 2007 WAS OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCED IN THE PRESENTATION OF THE ENERGY WEEK OF LATIN AMERICA AND THE CARIBBEAN

The energy week of Latin American and the Caribbean was presented this past November 8, 2007 in Medellin-Colombia during a ceremony that was headed by the Mayor of the city, Sergio Fajardo Valderrama. During this week, FIER 2007 will take place from November 28-30 in parallel to CONCIER and FISE. Additionally, the XXXVIII Meeting of Ministers of OLADE will be held, after which the Statement of Medellin will be emitted.

 

REGIONAL AND SUB-REGIONAL ENERGY INTEGRATION WILL BE ANALYZED AT FIER 2007

“From Planning to Action: Regional and Sub-regional Energy Integration” is the name of the main topic to be covered at FIER 2007, which is an event that will be held from November 28 to 30 of this year in Medellin-Colombia. In parallel to FIER 2007, CONCIER 2007 and the Electric Sector’s International Fair (FISE) will take place during the so-called “Latin American and Caribbean Energy Week”.

 

NEXT MEETING OF MINISTERS WILL ELECT THE NEW EXECUTIVE SECRETARY OF OLADE

The Ministers of Energy of Latin America and the Caribbean will elect on November 30, 2007 the new Executive Secretary of the Organization for the period 2008-2010 during the XXXVIII Meeting of Ministers of OLADE, which will take place in Medellin-Colombia.

 

SEVENTEEN COUNTRIES OF LATIN AMERICA AND THE CARIBBEAN DEBATED ABOUT BIOFUELS

More than 200 agents from 17 countries of the Region and other places of the world got together on September 26-28 in San Salvador-El Salvador at the II Latin-American and the Caribbean Biofuels Seminar.

 

OLADE EXTENDS THE DEADLINE FOR THE SUBMISSION OF APPLICATIONS TO INTERNATIONAL POSITIONS

The Latin American Energy Organization (OLADE) has extended the deadline to receive applications to fill vacancies for International Positions. The new deadline is December 14, 2007.

 

ALGERIA CREATES A STATISTICS COMMITTEE TO ADAPT THE INFORMATION SYSTEM (SIEN) DEVELOPED BY OLADE

The Ministry of Energy and Mines of Algeria informed the Permanent Secretariat of OLADE about the creation of a Statistics Committee that will jointly work with experts of the Organization to implement and adapt the National Energy Information System (SIEN) in that country.
