The United States Government announces its withdrawal from the Paris Climate Accord

The announcement was made this Thursday under the statement of “protecting the United States and its citizens against a draconian international deal”. The withdrawal will follow the process established in the agreement, which could take up to four years to complete. Within the announcement, he also mentioned that “we will begin to negotiate and see if we can make a fair pact  …”

This withdrawal will affect the contributions to the United Nations Green Climate Fund and compliance with the reduction of committed carbon emissions by stating that… “today, the United States will cease all implementation of the Paris Agreement and the heavy financial and economic burdens imposed to our country”

With this announcement, President Trump complies with one of his campaign promises, during which he assured that the agreement is detrimental to the jobs of the US citizens.

The withdrawal of the United States from the agreement has provoked strong criticism in the international arena. China, the world’s first emitter, on the other hand has reaffirmed its commitment to the agreement and will sign a partnership agreement with the EU to reduce carbon emissions.

The withdrawal of the United States “could mean, in the worst case scenario, a further warming of 0.3 degrees Celsius by the end of the century,” said Deon Terblanche, Director of the Atmospheric Research Department of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). It is difficult to accurately predict US emission levels with this decision, especially since many cities and companies have announced that they will continue to support the Paris Accord.

The energy sector in Latin America and the Caribbean is responsible for approximately 5% of greenhouse gas emissions; however, despite this fact, it will be one of the regions mostly affected by the negative effects of climate change.
