The Energy Information System for Paraguay (sieParaguay) was officially launched

The Energy Information System for Paraguay (sieParaguay) was officially launched on August 18, 2019 in Asunción, in the presence of Paraguay’s Deputy Minister of Mines and Energy, Carlos Zaldivar; the Director of Studies, Projects and Information of the Latin American Energy Organization (Olade), Andrés Schuschny and the Representative of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) in Paraguay, María Florencia Attademo.

This activity is part of the Program for Strengthening the Management and Dissemination of Energy Information for Sustainable Development in Latin America and the Caribbean, which Olade carries out thanks to the financial support of the IDB; program that aims to strengthen capacities in the management, dissemination and delivery of energy information in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The Deputy Minister of Mines and Energy of Paraguay, Carlos Zaldivar, recalled that Paraguay had requested Olade to be part of the Program for Strengthening Management and Dissemination of Energy Information for Sustainable Development for Latin America and the Caribbean, to which he pointed out that “from now on it is a great challenge and an institutional commitment ”.

He also mentioned that, during the process, Paraguay will work on the harmonization of methodologies for the preparation of energy balances, with international recommendations of the United Nations so that energy information is based on “internationally standardized” concepts.

For his part, the Director of Studies, Projects and Information of Olade, Andrés Schuschny, said that an Energy Information System consists not only of an online hardware and software that provides information to its users, but also of all the necessary coordination so that the various actors that provide energy information do so on the basis of common methodologies, units and definitions.

“This is particularly relevant considering the vast complexity involved in the identification of energy flows, which occur from primary production to final consumption of the various energy sources present in the country; this complexity is manifested in the conformation of the Energy Balance. It is for this reason that the launch is aimed at raising awareness among the actors about the need to work together so that the parameterization of the system adjusts to the availability of information and the energy chains present in the country”, added the Director of Studies, Projects and Information of Olade, Andrés Schuschny.

The IDB Representative in Paraguay, María Florencia Attademo, stressed the importance of having a comparable and reliable data to use internationally and that contributes to generate more knowledge and better capabilities in human capital. “You can’t manage what you don’t measure The IDB is the Hub for Latin America and the Caribbean in the Sustainable Energy for All initiative (SEforALL) and is pursuing the Sustainable Development Goal No. 7, which is to ensure universal access to clean and affordable energy for everyone”, he added.

In addition, he said that it seeks to automate access to information with modern technological tools to enhance knowledge management and energy planning models in the country.

Energy Information System for Paraguay (sieParaguay)
Through the new Information System, Paraguay will strengthen the capacities of administration, storage and processing of statistical information in the various topics that are required to analyze, monitor and know the evolution of the country’s energy sector, automating access to this type of information with modern technological tools and promoting models of knowledge management and energy planning in the country.

The National Energy Information System is expected to complete its implementation during the year 2020, whereby Paraguay and the region will strengthen the management of their energy information, thus supporting a more sustainable development of their matrix through the possibility of using more efficient and rational of energy resources on informed bases.
