OLADE’s Participation in the 10th Anniversary of the PetroCaribe Agreement and Commemoration of the 200th Anniversary of the “Carta de Jamaica”

OLADE’s Integration Director, Lennys Rivera, the Coordinator of Information Management and Training, Paola Carrera, and the Caribbean Subregional Office Consultant, Earl Green attended to the Summit to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of the PetroCaribe Agreement held on 5th September 2015 in Montego Bay, Jamaica, and the Commemoration of the 200th Anniversary of the “Carta de Jamaica” in Kingston on 6th September 2015.

During the opening remarks of the Summit of Heads of State and Government of Petrocaribe held in Montego Bay, the Minister of Petroleum and Mining of Venezuela, Eulogio Del Pino, informed that Petrocaribe is working on the Regional Energy Balances with the support OLADE.

The Jamaican Prime Minister, Portia Simpson Miller, and the President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro co-chaired the event, where it was discussed the actions and achievements of Petrocaribe in its first decade of existence and outlined the new agreements that strengthen the work of this initiative. High level authorities attended to both events such as President of Haiti, Machel Martelly; President of Nicaragua, Daniel Ortega; Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis, Dr Timothy Harris; Prime Minister of St Vincent and the Grenadines, Dr Ralph Gonsalves; Prime Minister of St Lucia, Dr Kenny Anthony, Prime Minister of Antigua Barbuda, Gaston Brown; Deputy Prime Minister of Belize, Margarito Gasper Vega; Vicepresident of Cuba, Salvador Valdes Mesa; Vicepresident of Suriname, Ashwin Adhin; among others. Additionally, it was attended by the Caribbean Community (Caricom) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

Given the significant share of resources of Petrocaribe´s member countries, it is essential for the initiative to have the regional energy balances as a tool to assess its evolution over time within their energy markets and have solid statistics to serve as a basis for decision-making and future studies on energy efficiency and energy planning of the countries of Petrocaribe. Furthermore, the Regional Energy Balance prepared by OLADE will be able to determine the contribution made by Petrocaribe in their member countries within the last decade. Petrocaribe member countries are the following: the Bahamas, Belize, Cuba, Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Nicaragua, the Dominican Republic, St. Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname and Venezuela.
