OLADE to coordinate efforts in partnership with IDB, UNDP, and ECLAC for Sustainable Energy for All in the Americas

The Latin America Energy Organization (OLADE), formally agreed to partner with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in support of the Sustainable Energy for All initiative in the Americas. ECLAC and UNDP officially joined SE4All Americas on February 24, 2015 in order to increase their collaboration with the IDB, which serves as the Sustainable Energy for All hub for the Americas. OLADE is based in Quito, Ecuador and has 27 member countries from Latin America and the Caribbean. OLADE’s mission is to contribute to the integration, sustainable development and energy security in the Americas, advising and promoting cooperation and coordination among its Member Countries

The OLADE announcement was made during the IDB Regional Energy Policy Dialogue held in Tarija, Bolivia on October 29, 2015 with the participation of Energy Ministers and other senior-level Energy Sector officials from 19 Latin American and Caribbean countries, as well as representatives of IDB, ECLAC, UNDP, OLADE and other regional organizations. The IDB Regional Energy Policy Dialogue was convened in association with the XLV OLADE Energy Ministerial Meeting.

The global United Nations SE4All initiative targets three strategic priorities: (1) Ensuring universal access to modern energy services, (2) Doubling the global rate of improvement in energy efficiency; and (3) Doubling the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix- by 2030. These priorities are now incorporated as Goal number 7 of the Post-2015 Sustainable Development Agenda, which was approved at the United Nations Sustainable Development Summit on September 25, 2015.

According to Arnaldo Vieira de Carvalho, Lead Energy Specialist at the IDB, “SE4All now has additional impetus due to the post-2015 Global Development Agenda’s incorporation of the three SE4All pillars into Sustainable Development Goal #7. The OLADE collaboration will contribute to the SE4All goals with tools like its SIEE/SIER regional data base.”

OLADE brings to the partnership its several tools and channels of communication within the region, such as the SIEE/SIER energy database, its information gathering process within Latin American and Caribbean countries, and its Regional Seminars (Energy Eficiency, Biofuels, Integration). OLADE has official energy information systems that will be used to measure the progress of SE4ALL objectives.

As Dr. Fernando Ferreira, Executive Secretary of OLADE explains, “this partnership will improve sustainable energy development across a broad range of initiatives, projects and studies in energy efficiency, energy access and renewable energy development, which is consistent with SE4All pillars and UN Sustainable Development Goal #7.”

This growing SE4All Americas partnership of four leading regional organizations will help create knowledge products, plan for universal access to energy, coordinate with national and international partners, monitor the progress of SE4All Americas, and prepare and finance projects that support the target priorities of SE4All and Sustainable Development Goal number 7.

The IDB, ECLAC, UNDP and now OLADE are supporting this partnership to make a sustainable energy future a reality in the region, recognizing the importance of increasing coordination in the region, and by joining forces they will help promote the SE4All targets.
