Olade commemorates 45 years of contributing to the development of the energy sector in Latin America and the Caribbean

On the morning of November 7, 2018, at the headquarters of the Latin American Energy Organization (OLADE) in Quito-Ecuador, a commemoration event was held for the Forty-fifth Anniversary of the constitution of the Organization, consecrated as of the signing of the Lima Agreement, on November 2, 1973.

In this act of celebration the Executive Secretary of Olade, Alfonso Blanco highlighted “Today is 45 years from the signing of the Olade constitutive agreement and even when the reality of the energy sector in Latin America and the Caribbean has substantial differences with that distant November of 1973, the Lima Agreement continues to demonstrate its full validity and is a living and latent example of the open regionalism of Latin America and the Caribbean. ”

Within the framework of this event, a tribute was made to the artwork AMERINDIA made 25 years ago by the Ecuadorian painter Voroshilov Bazante. Mural that couples the endless spaces of the ideal figures of the spirit, water, sun and earth as sources of energy generation. This work is exhibited at the OLADE headquarters.

This meeting was attended by representatives of the Diplomatic Corps, international organizations, Ambassadors of the Member Countries of Olade and authorities of the Ecuadorian State.

Current data on OLADE’s management

Olade was born in the search for a new equitable economic relationship between countries of Latin America and the Caribbean, with the fundamental purpose of promoting the integration, protection, conservation, rational exploitation, commercialization and defense of the energy resources of our Region.

The validity of the Lima Agreement is reflected in the management currently carried out by Olade through various actions such as; the implementation of rural energization projects in Bolivia, Guatemala and Guyana, countries where a total of 4 thousand 109 people have benefited through access to electricity. The strengthening of information systems at the regional level through the execution of two large projects developed with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the World Bank. The latter is destined for five Caribbean countries (Belize, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica and Suriname).

Assistance to the Member Countries of the Organization has been a fundamental pillar in this 45-year work trajectory, through the strengthening of the planning and development capabilities of regulatory frameworks that Olade provides through tool methodologies for the implementation of specific projects .

Olade has continuously supported the transformation processes of the energy sector in the region and has become a powerful instrument for political and strategic dialogue at the sectoral level.

Currently, the Organization works hard in the development of public policies that incorporate the transition of the energy sector in relation to renewable energies and energy efficiency in new technologies.

Regional integration has been a constant work that has been promoted by Olade both in the electricity sector and in the hydrocarbon; and in the area of experiences and knowledge exchange among the countries, on lessons learned around the development of normative and regulatory frameworks, so that countries that have not been able to initiate these processes incorporate experiences of successful cases from other states.

Olade works in order to achieve the universalization of access to energy and to contribute in this way, the Organization made a support report for this year’s presidency of the G20 (main international forum for economic, financial and political cooperation) in relation to access to energy with a focus on Latin America and the Caribbean.
