National Assembly of Ecuador approves the Energy Efficiency Law project that received the technical support of Olade

On March 12, 2019, the National Assembly of Ecuador approved the Energy Efficiency Law, a draft Law that had the technical support of Olade, through the Executive Secretary, Alfonso Blanco, who made some recommendations as part of the experience gained in the development of the Energy Efficiency Law in Uruguay, of which he was a part.

In the first analysis dialogues on the Energy Efficiency Law, which was carried out by the National Assembly of Ecuador in previous months, to which the Executive Secretary of Olade, Alfonso Blanco, was invited, pointed out the importance of the boost of energy efficiency through a law that regulate the actions aimed at achieving the goals of reduction and efficient use of energy. Road that several countries of the region have traveled.

Energy Efficiency Law in Ecuador

The regulation seeks to develop energy efficiency in the country, with specific and clear legislation, which will contribute to saving energy, the efforts against climate change and living in a healthy environment.

It promotes energy saving, favoring the pocket of the citizens; promotes competitiveness; the use of environmentally clean practices and technologies. This will reduce the environmental impact and contribute to not putting food sovereignty at risk, taking into account that climate change has worsened the living conditions of farmers and fishermen.

It also aims to optimize the country’s resources, since it will reduce the use of non-renewable fuels, such as gasoline and diesel, which the State has to subsidize.

In Ecuador, of all the energy consumed, 67% is in use of diesel, gasoline and liquefied gas. Only 15% is based on electricity.

Electric mobility

The proposal encourages the proliferation of electric mobility (public and private vehicles); creates a National Fund for Development and Investment in energy efficiency; establishes a National System of Energy Efficiency (Snee) to promote the efficient, rational and sustainable use of energy.

Monitoring of the progress and results of the executed programs will be developed in order to have statistics to make future decisions. Source: National Assembly of the Republic of Ecuador https://bit.ly/2T4k5F7
