OLADE CELEBRATES A WEEK TO HONOUR THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
The Latin American Energy Organization (OLADE) joins in the celebration of another year since the Dominican Republic's Independence on February 27, 1844, by establishing the week of February 23 to 27, 2009, to honour that member country.
OLADE presents below some of the characteristic aspects and energy-sector potential of this important country, which currently forms part of its Directive Committee.
In the Dominican Republic, electricity is primarily generated by thermoelectric plants. Data provided by the Comisión Nacional de Energía (CNE) establish that in 2006 the total installed capacity was 3,596 MW, 84% of which was of thermoelectric origin and 16% from hydropower.
According to statements by the Minister and Secretary of State and CNE President, Arístides Fernández Zucco, renewable energy sources were also promoted, thereby contributing to the energy security and independence of that country.
Projects that the country is currently pushing include five generation plants based on biomass and one based on solar energy, for a joint capacity of 150 Mw.

As for biofuel, the CNE is developing a project for the production and use of biodiesel as an alternative to fossil fuels. This will bring environmental benefits, promote agro-industries and create jobs in the rural areas.
In addition, Dominican legal reforms have made it possible to import, process and produce ethanol. A mixture of ethanol and gasoline will substitute the MTBE that is added to fuel, thereby eliminating the high toxic content of the additive.
