U4E and Olade delivered a series of webinars on mobilizing climate finance to achieve climate change commitments

The Latin American Energy Organization (Olade) and United for Efficiency (U4E) formed an alliance to develop a series of three webinars: Introduction to Market Transformation Projects through UNEP’s U4E Policy Approach; Opportunities for Financing Programs for Climate Change Projects; and Examples of Financial Mechanisms in national/regional projects, all webinars carried out in March were related to climate finance.

The objective of these webinars was to advise on issues of unlocking climate finance for the implementation of projects that help countries meet their NDC goals and commitments on climate change. These webinars were mainly aimed at the political leaders of the countries, the technical personnel involved in the development, financing and management of projects on climate, energy, water and waste.

However, the content of the webinars is also relevant to those in the private sector, academia or in other areas interested in the transformation frameworks of the climate/energy finance market, solutions and practices of international policy of procurement of green sustainable electrical products, in general.

The first webinar described how the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) can achieve their environmental commitments through an integrated political approach to market transformation.

The second webinar discussed the funding program opportunities available for climate change projects. This included details of the specific features and opportunities of the Green Climate Fund (GCF), and its readiness fast-track program, along with information on the process and details needed to develop national and regional GCF projects.

Project requirements and funding available from other climate finance programs, such as the Kigali Cooling Efficiency Program (K-CEP) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF), were also discussed. All of this was supported by examples of the process of preparing and submitting the proposal for a successful GCF preparation project that covered Brazil, Cuba, El Salvador and Honduras.

The last webinar described U4E’s experiences with financial mechanisms for energy efficient market transformation projects. Details of different financing models were also presented, such as energy saving insurance or efficiency as a service managed by BASE.

These webinars were held on the platform of the “Knowledge Community – capevLAC” https://capevlac.olade.org/     of Olade, whose main objective is to strengthen technical capacities at the public and private level in the region, through a high quality modular training.
