Technical Article Nº4: ENERGY EFFICIENCY: AN UNEXPLOITED RESOURCE
The document describes the experience developed by several countries of the Region that have pursued energy efficiency programs at the national level, showing that energy efficiency should be considered as the most important available resource to ensure energy supply in a country.
Under this premise, the study proposes a methodology that includes common guidelines that may be adopted by each Country of the Region and that will allow them to institutionalize energy efficiency services as a long-term effort within their national energy policies. |
Technical Article No 3: TARGETING FUEL SUBSIDIES IN LATIN AMERICA AND THE CARIBBEAN.
A study with data to 2005, recently concluded by the Organization, regarding fuel subsidies in Latin America and the Caribbean, shows that these grants represent approximately 2.2% (USD 25,629 MM) of Regional GDP. According to the case study applied to Ecuador, the percentage of subsidies with respect to GDP is one of the highest in the Region, approaching 6.7%.
A mechanism for targeting LPG subsidies, protecting the most deprived social groups, would save Ecuador more than USA 322 MM in subsidies. |
